Hiring a web designer is a big decision — and an expensive mistake to get wrong. Before you sign anything, ask these ten questions. The answers will tell you very quickly whether you’re dealing with a true professional or a risky bargain.
1. Will I own my website?
You should own your domain, your content and your site outright. Some “cheap” deals lock you into a platform you can never leave. Always confirm ownership up front.
2. Is it built to be found on Google?
A beautiful site that nobody finds is useless. Ask how they’ll structure the site for SEO and local search from day one.
3. Will it work perfectly on mobile?
Most of your customers will visit on a phone. “Mobile-first” should be a given, not an extra.
4. Can I update it myself?
You shouldn’t have to pay every time you change a price or add a photo. Make sure you can edit it — or that affordable support is included.
5. What’s actually included in the price?
Hosting, support, SSL, backups, updates — these all cost money. A clear quote should spell out what’s included and what isn’t, with no nasty surprises later.
6. Can I see your recent work?
Ask for live websites they’ve built — not just screenshots. Real, working sites tell you everything about their quality.
7. Who will I actually deal with?
Will you have a real person to call, or be lost in a ticket system? A local team that picks up the phone is worth a lot.
8. How long will it take?
A straight answer with a realistic timeline shows they’re organised. Vague promises are a warning sign.
9. What happens after launch?
A website needs looking after. Ask about support, security and updates once the site is live.
10. Are there any ongoing costs?
Hosting and support fees are normal and worthwhile — but you deserve to know exactly what they are before you commit.
