You’ve got a website. It looks decent enough. Maybe you even invested a fair amount getting it built. But the enquiries aren’t coming in, the phone isn’t ringing, and visitors seem to disappear without a trace.
Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. Across the businesses we work with here in South Yorkshire and beyond, this is one of the most common frustrations we hear. And the good news? It’s almost always fixable. The bad news? Most people are looking in the wrong place for the problem.
Let’s break down the real reasons your website isn’t converting — and what you can actually do about it.
1. Your Website Was Built to Look Good, Not to Sell
There’s a big difference between a pretty website and a profitable one. Many web designers — especially budget ones — focus on aesthetics. Clean layouts, nice photos, matching colours. Lovely. But a website that doesn’t guide a visitor toward taking action is just an expensive brochure.
Every page on your site should have a clear purpose. What do you want the visitor to do next? Call you? Fill in a form? Buy something? If that answer isn’t obvious from the layout, the copy, and the calls-to-action — they won’t do it.
What to check: Load your homepage. Without scrolling, can you instantly tell what you do, who you help, and what to do next? If not, that’s your first problem.
2. Your Call-to-Action Is Buried, Vague, or Missing Entirely
“Get in touch.” “Learn more.” “Contact us.”
These are weak. They don’t create urgency, they don’t tell someone what happens when they click, and they don’t give any reason to act now rather than later.
Strong calls-to-action are specific and benefit-led. “Get a Free Website Audit.” “Request a Quote Today.” “Book Your Free Consultation.” They tell visitors exactly what they’re getting and make it feel worthwhile.
And they need to be visible — above the fold, in the navigation, repeated throughout the page. Not hidden in a footer or buried after six paragraphs.
3. Your Page Speed Is Killing You Silently
Google’s own research shows that 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Three seconds. That’s nothing.
If your site is running bloated themes, unoptimised images, outdated plugins, or poor-quality hosting, every extra second of load time is costing you real visitors — and real revenue. Worse, slow sites also rank lower in Google, so fewer people find you in the first place.
This is one of the most underestimated conversion killers we see. Businesses spend money on ads driving traffic to a slow site, then wonder why nothing converts.
Quick test: Run your site through PageSpeed Insights and see your score. If you’re below 70 on mobile, this needs attention urgently.
4. Your Visitors Don’t Trust You Yet
Trust is everything online. And trust is built in the first few seconds.
Ask yourself: does your site have genuine customer reviews or testimonials — with names and photos? Does it show your actual team or the face behind the business? Is there a clear address, phone number, and signs of real-world presence? Do you have case studies or examples of past work?
If your site is anonymous, generic, or lacking social proof, visitors will bounce to a competitor who feels more credible. It’s not personal — it’s just how people make decisions online.
Even small things matter: a professional logo, consistent branding, proper grammar and spelling, a working phone number in the header. These signals tell visitors this business is legitimate and worth my time.
5. Your Copy Is About You, Not Them
Here’s a hard truth: your visitors don’t care about your company. Not yet. What they care about is their own problem and whether you can solve it.
Most website copy reads something like: “We are a family-run business established in 2010 with over 20 years of combined experience…”
That’s not what converts. What converts is copy that speaks directly to the visitor’s situation — their frustration, their goal, their hesitation — and shows clearly how you help.
Lead with their pain. Then introduce your solution. Then back it up with proof. That’s the formula.
6. You’re Getting the Wrong Traffic
Sometimes the conversion problem isn’t on-site at all — it’s the visitors themselves.
If you’re ranking for vague keywords, attracting traffic from the wrong geography, or pulling in people at the wrong stage of the buying journey, no amount of great design will fix things. You can’t convert someone who was never going to buy.
This is where proper SEO strategy makes a huge difference. It’s not just about getting more traffic — it’s about getting the right traffic. People who are actively searching for what you offer, in your area, ready to make a decision.
7. Your Site Isn’t Mobile-Friendly
Over 60% of web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site looks great on a desktop but breaks, squashes, or becomes unusable on a phone, you’re writing off the majority of your potential customers.
Mobile-friendliness isn’t just about things “fitting on the screen.” It’s about buttons being big enough to tap, text being readable without zooming, forms being easy to fill, and the overall experience feeling smooth and intentional.
Google also ranks mobile performance separately — so a poor mobile experience will actively suppress your rankings as well.
8. There’s No Follow-Up Mechanism
What happens when someone fills in your contact form at 9pm on a Sunday? Do they hear back promptly? Or do they wait until Monday, by which point they’ve already contacted two competitors?
Speed of response is one of the most powerful conversion factors that nobody talks about. Studies show that responding to an enquiry within 5 minutes makes you 100x more likely to convert that lead than responding an hour later.
If you don’t have systems in place — automated acknowledgement emails, a CRM to track enquiries, notification alerts — you’re losing warm leads before you even know they existed.
So What Should You Do?
Start by auditing what you’ve got. Look at your Google Analytics (if you have it set up — and you should). Where are people dropping off? Which pages have high bounce rates? How long are people spending on your site?
Then work through the checklist above. Most of these issues are entirely fixable with the right expertise — and fixing even two or three of them can make a dramatic difference to your enquiry rate.
